Battlefield 6 Launch Hailed as Return to Roots; Scores 84-88 on Metacritic

EA’s highly-anticipated Battlefield 6 launched on October 10, 2025, to widespread critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the military shooter’s definitive return to the series’ roots. The game holds impressive Metacritic scores of 84 on PC and PlayStation 5, and a high of 88 on Xbox Series X|S. This marks a significant turnaround from 2021’s poorly-received Battlefield 2042, which scored only 68.

Multiplayer Excellence Drives Positive Battlefield 6 Reviews

Critics have unanimously praised the Battlefield 6 multiplayer experience, calling it the strongest in the series in nearly a decade. Game Rant awarded the game a 9/10, with reviewer Dalton Cooper writing, “Battlefield 6 is a feature-complete first-person shooter at launch that should provide fans of the genre with countless hours of entertainment.”

The return of the classic four-class system—Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Support—has been lauded by critics and fans alike. PCGamesN, which also gave a 9/10, called it the “most fun and polished installment in the series.” The signature destruction mechanics have also been significantly enhanced, with GameSpot noting the game “delivers a chaotic, large-scale multiplayer experience that feels both familiar and incredibly fun.”

Battlefield 6 includes nine maps at launch, featuring the return of the fan-favorite “Operation Firestorm” alongside new locations spanning from the Manhattan Bridge to the mountains of Tajikistan. The game supports up to 64 players and features returning modes like Conquest, Breakthrough, and Rush, as well as the new “Escalation” mode, which introduces battle royale elements to traditional objective capture.

Campaign Delivers a Mixed Reception

While the multiplayer component received near-universal praise, the single-player campaign’s reception has been more mixed. IGN was particularly critical, giving the campaign a 5/10 and calling it a “safe, dull retread of the series’ glory days rather than a bold new take on what’s possible.”

The campaign, which consists of nine missions, follows the NATO special forces unit “Dagger 13” as they battle the private military company “Pax Armata” between 2027-2028.

Despite the narrative shortcomings, other reviewers praised the campaign’s technical achievements and destruction effects. Outerhaven gave the game 4.5/5 stars, noting that while the campaign is short at around six hours, it “succeeds as a showcase for the game’s mechanical improvements” and serves as effective preparation for multiplayer.

Strong Pre-Launch Performance and Future Content

Early indicators suggest Battlefield 6 is poised for commercial success. The Open Beta in August was the largest in the series’ history, peaking at 521,079 concurrent players on Steam alone. David Sirland, Battlefield’s chief producer, stated the test “helped size player interest” and expressed confidence in server readiness for the October 10th launch.

The game launched globally with no early access period at 8:00 AM PDT / 11:00 AM EDT / 4:00 PM BST. Season 1 content is scheduled to arrive on October 28, bringing a new map, new weapons, and the highly-anticipated battle royale mode.
