Elon Musk’s xAI Launches Grokipedia Beta as “Uncensored” Wikipedia Alternative

Elon Musk's xAI has quietly launched the beta for Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia positioned as an "uncensored" rival to Wikipedia. It uses Grok AI to verify "absolute truth," drawing criticism from Jimmy Wales.

Elon Musk’s xAI appeared to have quietly launched the beta version of Grokipedia on Monday, positioning the AI-driven encyclopedia as an “uncensored” alternative to Wikipedia after months of delays and controversy.

Social media users reported that Grokipedia v0.1 is now live with approximately 885,000 articles, though the platform appears to be in a limited testing mode for select X users. The launch comes a week after Musk’s originally planned October 20 release date, which he postponed, citing a need to “purge propaganda.”

An “AI-Powered Truth Engine”

Grokipedia leverages xAI’s Grok AI model to analyze and verify information from multiple sources, including existing Wikipedia articles, documents, and PDFs. The system then classifies this information as “true, partially true, false, or missing” before rewriting the content to reflect what Musk has described as “absolute truth.”

Unlike Wikipedia’s community-driven editorial model, Grokipedia relies entirely on AI curation. It promises real-time updates and the elimination of what Musk has repeatedly called “editorial bias.” The platform is designed as an “open-source knowledge base” with unrestricted use.

The concept originated during the All-In Podcast summit in September, when co-host David Sacks suggested Musk turn Grok’s fact-checking capabilities into a standalone service. Musk has long been a vocal critic of Wikipedia, famously labeling it “Wokipedia” and accusing it of having a left-wing bias.

Wikipedia’s Co-Founder Responds

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has pushed back against Musk’s criticisms. He told The New York Times that the attacks from Musk and other right-wing figures have actually driven a surge in donations to Wikipedia.

“It’s not my favorite way to fundraise, but the fact is, a lot of people react very negatively to this behavior,” Wales said.

Wales revealed he has communicated privately with Musk, describing him as “more respectful and restrained” in private conversations than in his public statements. He also warned that Musk’s attacks risk driving away thoughtful conservative contributors from Wikipedia while fueling “extremist activists on both sides.”

The Grokipedia launch marks Musk’s latest attempt to reshape information platforms, following his acquisition of Twitter and its rebrand to X. As the platform undergoes testing, questions remain about whether it can deliver on its promise of unbiased, AI-verified knowledge while avoiding the controversies that have previously plagued Grok’s AI responses.
